Wheel Spacer Safety: Why Correct Wheel Fitment Matters

Vehicle & Safety Concern

A recent vehicle brought into Marks Mechanics in Garbutt, Townsville highlighted just how quickly an unexpected wheel failure can become a frightening experience. The vehicle's front wheel came off while the owner was driving at night with their children on board, with several wheel studs snapping in the process.

The vehicle had been purchased second-hand, raising an important reminder for used-car buyers: you don't always know what modifications may have been made by previous owners. While the exact cause of the failure could not be attributed to any one component, the incident highlighted the importance of checking wheel fitment and mounting components.

Inspection & Diagnosis

Following the incident, the team at Marks Mechanics inspected the affected wheel mounting components and highlighted the potential risks associated with aftermarket wheel spacers.

One important point for motorists to understand is that wheel spacers cannot always be identified during a routine visual inspection. The wheels need to be removed to properly check whether spacers have been fitted between the wheel and hub. This is particularly worth considering when purchasing a second-hand vehicle, as previous modifications may not be immediately obvious.

Incorrect or unsuitable wheel spacers can reduce wheel nut and stud engagement, place additional loads on wheel bearings and suspension components, and alter steering and suspension geometry. They can also introduce clearance and fitment problems.

Importantly, aftermarket wheel spacers are generally not permitted on Queensland road vehicles unless fitted as original equipment by the vehicle manufacturer. Any proposed modifications must comply with applicable Queensland vehicle standards.

Wheel Safety & Recommendations

Although Marks Mechanics could not confirm that wheel spacers caused this particular wheel failure, the incident reinforced why wheel mounting components should never be overlooked. A failed wheel stud or incorrectly secured wheel can have serious consequences for vehicle control and occupant safety.

The team recommends using the correct wheels and tyres specified for your vehicle and avoiding modifications that are not permitted or appropriately engineered. If you've recently purchased a second-hand vehicle or are unsure whether aftermarket spacers have been fitted, consider having the wheels professionally removed and inspected.
